Chikungunya virus (CHIKV)는 alphavirus 계통에 속하며, 외피를 가진 icosahedral capsid 구조를 가집니다. Alphavirus의 성숙 과정은 구조 단백질의 일부가 핵캡시드와 조립되기 전에 단백질분해를 거쳐 성숙 바이리온을 형성하는 과정으로 진행됩니다.
E3 단백질은 serine-type endopeptidase 활성을 가지며, p62 전구체 당단백질이 E2 및 E3로 절단되어 핵캡시드와 조립됨으로써 융합이 가능한 성숙 스파이크를 형성하는 데 관여합니다.
