Target Information
The SYT12 gene is a member of the synaptotagmin family and encodes a protein that mediates calcium-dependent regulation of membrane trafficking in synaptic transmission. Studies in rat orthologs indicate that the protein modulates spontaneous synaptic-vesicle exocytosis and may also regulate calcium-independent secretion in nonneuronal cells. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. The gene was previously known as synaptotagmin XI but renamed synaptotagmin XII for consistency with mouse and rat nomenclature.
