Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by ABCB4 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is associated with multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. ABCB4 encodes a full transporter of the p-glycoprotein family, utilizing phosphatidylcholine as a substrate.
It may function in the transport of phospholipids from liver hepatocytes into bile. Alternative splicing results in several isoforms with undetermined function.
