Target Information
Complement component 5 (C5) is a key protein in inflammatory and cell-killing processes. It consists of alpha and beta polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. Upon activation, C5 is cleaved to produce C5a, an anaphylatoxin with potent spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, and C5b, which participates in forming the membrane attack complex with C6 and other complement components. Mutations in C5 are associated with complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent infections, and are linked to liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility.
