Target Information
Cadherins are a multigene family of calcium-dependent cell adhesion molecules. They are transmembrane glycoproteins composed of:
- An extracellular domain mediating Ca++-dependent intercellular adhesion through homophilic interactions
- A transmembrane region
- A cytoplasmic domain
The extracellular domain includes subdomains EC1–EC5. Homologies among cadherin family members are most pronounced in the cytoplasmic domain and EC1–EC2 regions.
M-Cadherin is specifically expressed at low levels in myoblasts and upregulated during myotube formation, indicating a role in skeletal muscle differentiation.
