Target Information
The sodium channel protein type 8 subunit alpha (Na⁺ channel protein type VIII alpha) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein that mediates sodium ion permeability in excitable membranes. Voltage-gated sodium channels consist of a pore-forming alpha subunit and two beta subunits (β1 and β2) that regulate expression levels, gating, and function as cell adhesion molecules.
Type I and III alpha subunits are mainly expressed in neuronal cell bodies and proximal processes, while type II alpha subunits are abundant along axons. Sodium channels are essential for rapid signal transduction and neuronal development.
Defects in the SCN8A gene can impair secondary motoneuron growth, leading to progressive paralysis and early death.
