Target Information

Phosphorylase kinase is a hexadecameric enzyme comprised of four copies of four subunits encoded by PHKA, PHKB, PHKG, and PH genes. This serine/threonine-specific kinase converts glycogen phosphorylase b to glycogen phosphorylase a, releasing glucose-1-phosphate from glycogen.
PHKB (Phosphorylase b kinase regulatory subunit beta) is a 1093 amino acid subunit with regulatory functions controlled by phosphorylation.
Defects in PHKB cause glycogen storage disease type 9B (phosphorylase kinase deficiency of liver and muscle), characterized by mild hepatomegaly, slightly elevated transaminase and plasma lipids, no clinical muscle involvement, and improvement with age.
Four isoforms of PHKB are produced by alternative splicing events.
