Target Information
USP7 (also known as HAUSP) is a ubiquitin-specific protease or deubiquitylating enzyme that removes ubiquitin from its substrates. Since ubiquitination is often associated with protein degradation, HAUSP activity generally stabilizes its substrate proteins. HAUSP is a known antagonist of Mdm2, the E3 ubiquitin ligase for the tumor suppressor protein p53. By deubiquitinating p53, HAUSP can protect it from Mdm2-mediated degradation, suggesting a tumor-suppressive role in stress response. HAUSP may also contribute to oncogenic stabilization of p53 through alternative pathways independent of ARF.
