This antibody recognizes an extracellular epitope of CD35 (CR1), a type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on granulocytes, monocytes, B cells, follicular dendritic cells, erythrocytes, NK and T cell subsets, as well as on glomerular podocytes.
Target Information
CD35 (CR1, Complement Receptor 1) is a cell membrane-bound monomeric glycoprotein that serves as the receptor for C3b and C4b, key components of the complement system. It mediates binding to particles and immune complexes with activated complement. CD35 exists in four allotypes (C, A, B, D) with molecular weights ranging from 160 to 250 kDa. It plays a role in immune complex processing, promoting phagocytosis of C3b complexes, and inhibiting complement activation. CD35 is expressed on neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, B-cells, some NK-cells, erythrocytes, myeloid leukemias, and follicular dendritic reticulum cells, but not on basophils. Altered expression or mutations in CD35 are associated with various diseases including gallbladder carcinoma, glomerulonephritis, lupus erythematosus, and sarcoidosis. Certain mutations confer protection against severe malaria by reducing Plasmodium falciparum rosetting. Alternate splice variants and a secreted form have been described.
