Target Information
The kelch-repeat protein family is a newly identified group of actin-binding proteins characterized by tandemly arranged motifs of about 50 amino acids. Most members of this family are cytoskeletal proteins involved in processes such as actin cytoskeleton interaction, cytoplasmic sequestration of transcription factors, and regulation of cell morphology.
During large-scale sequencing of a human fetal brain cDNA library, a novel kelch-like protein gene, KLHL5, was identified. KLHL5 shares high identity with Drosophila kelch protein and other family members. A novel splicing variant, KLHL5b, shows expression in various tissues.
