Target Information
Activins are dimeric growth and differentiation factors belonging to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. They signal through a heteromeric complex of receptor serine kinases, including type I (I and IB) and type II (II and IIB) receptors. These transmembrane proteins have extracellular ligand-binding domains, transmembrane domains, and cytoplasmic serine/threonine kinase domains. Type I receptors are essential for signaling, while type II receptors are required for ligand binding and type I receptor expression. Upon ligand binding, type I receptors are phosphorylated by type II receptors. Activin A mutations are associated with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
