INSIG2는 INSIG1 유전자 산물과 높은 상동성을 가지며, 둘 다 소포체(ER) 단백질로서 sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs)의 가공을 억제합니다. 이는 SREBP cleavage-activating protein (SCAP)에 결합하여 SCAP이 SREBPs를 골지체로 이동시키는 것을 방지함으로써 조절 기능을 수행합니다.
