Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier family. UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate the transfer of anions and protons across mitochondrial membranes, reducing membrane potential in mammalian cells.
UCPs show tissue-specific expression patterns, and UCP1 is expressed exclusively in brown adipose tissue, which functions in heat production.
