Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. UCPs uncouple oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate the transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the return transfer of protons back. UCPs reduce mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells, and tissue-specific expression varies among UCPs. The exact mechanism of proton transfer remains unclear. UCP1 is expressed only in brown adipose tissue, which functions to produce heat.
