Target Information
Secretin belongs to the glucagon family. This protein is an endocrine hormone primarily produced by endocrine S cells in the proximal small intestinal mucosa. Its release is stimulated by fatty acids or acidic pH in the duodenum. Secretin promotes secretion of bicarbonate-rich pancreatic fluids and regulates growth and development of the stomach, small intestine, and pancreas. Deficiency has been linked to autistic syndrome, indicating possible neuroendocrine functions in addition to digestive roles.
