Target Information

Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the CNS and functions as a Ca²⁺ sensor in exocytosis and neurotransmitter release. Its Ca²⁺-mediated binding of SNAP25 is essential for Ca²⁺-dependent membrane triggering. Specific residues within the C2B domain determine endocytic rate and vesicle size. Synaptotagmin 1 regulates synaptic vesicle trafficking and binds acidic phospholipids requiring both acidic head groups and diacyl backbones. It interacts with protein kinase C receptors in a Ca²⁺-dependent manner and binds neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2 independently of Ca²⁺.
Diseases associated with Synaptotagmin 1 dysfunction include food-borne and infant botulism.
