Target Information
The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex composed of two major subcomplexes: a 20S core and a 19S regulator. The 20S core consists of four rings of 28 distinct subunits (two α-rings and two β-rings). The 19S regulator includes a base with ATPase and non-ATPase subunits and a lid containing up to 10 non-ATPase subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and mediate ATP/ubiquitin-dependent peptide cleavage in a non-lysosomal pathway. A modified form, the immunoproteasome, plays a critical role in class I MHC peptide processing. The PSMD5 gene encodes a non-ATPase subunit of the 19S regulator base.
