The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex composed of two subcomplexes: a 20S core and a 19S regulator.
- The 20S core consists of 4 rings of 28 non-identical subunits (two rings of 7 alpha and two rings of 7 beta subunits).
- The 19S regulator contains a base (6 ATPase and 2 non-ATPase subunits) and a lid (up to 10 non-ATPase subunits).
Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides via an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway.
The immunoproteasome variant processes class I MHC peptides.
This gene encodes one of the non-ATPase subunits of the 19S regulator lid, potentially involved in TNF signaling through interaction with TNF receptor type 1.
A pseudogene is located on chromosome 1.
