Target Information
Alpha actinins belong to the spectrin gene superfamily, a group of cytoskeletal proteins including alpha/beta spectrins and dystrophins. Alpha actinin is an actin-binding protein with multiple roles:
- In nonmuscle cells, it binds actin to membranes at adherens junctions.
- In muscle cells, it localizes to the Z-disc and dense bodies to anchor myofibrillar actin filaments.
- The nonmuscle isoform encoded by this gene is cytoplasmic and implicated in metastatic processes.
- Mutations in this gene are associated with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis.
