This gene encodes a complex glycoprotein secreted in plasma. The precursor is proteolytically processed into distinct functioning proteins:
- alpha-1-microglobulin, belonging to the lipocalin transport protein superfamily, may regulate inflammatory processes.
- Bikunin, a urinary trypsin inhibitor of the Kunitz-type protease inhibitor superfamily, plays a role in multiple physiological and pathological processes.
This gene is located on chromosome 9 within a cluster of lipocalin genes.
