The zeta-sarcoglycan (SGCZ) gene spans over 465 kb and is localized to chromosome 8p22. This protein is part of the sarcoglycan complex, a group of six N-glycosylated transmembrane proteins with short intracellular domains, single transmembrane regions, and large extracellular domains containing conserved cysteine residues. The sarcoglycan complex is a component of the dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex (DGC), which links the inner cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix.
