Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins essential for the initiation of eukaryotic genome replication. The hexameric MCM complex is a key component of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC) and may participate in replication fork formation and recruitment of DNA replication-related proteins. The MCM complex containing MCM2, 6, and 7 possesses DNA helicase activity and functions as a DNA unwinding enzyme. Phosphorylation by CDC2 kinase reduces helicase activity and chromatin binding of the MCM complex. This gene is located on chromosome 8 adjacent to PRKDC/DNA-PK, a DNA repair kinase. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
