Target Information
The KCNQ4 gene encodes a potassium channel that plays a key role in regulating neuronal excitability, especially in cochlear sensory cells. This channel’s current is inhibited by M1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors and activated by retigabine, an anti-convulsant drug. The protein can form homomultimeric or heteromultimeric potassium channels with KCNQ3. Mutations in this gene cause nonsyndromic sensorineural deafness type 2, an autosomal dominant progressive hearing loss. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
