Target Information
Mutations in the Schizosaccharomyces pombe Rae1 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Gle2 genes lead to accumulation of poly-containing mRNA in the nucleus, suggesting involvement in RNA export. The human RAE1 protein, a homolog of yeast Rae1, contains four WD40 motifs and localizes to nucleoplasmic foci, the nuclear rim, and cytoplasmic meshwork-like structures. It is implicated in nucleocytoplasmic transport and attachment of cytoplasmic mRNPs to the cytoskeleton. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
