Specificity: Human Interferon Gamma (IFN gamma / IFNG)
Target Information
IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens, mitogens, Staphylococcus enterotoxin B, phytohemaglutanin, and other cytokines. It is a dimeric glycoprotein composed of two 146 amino acid subunits forming a functional homodimer (~45 kDa). On SDS-PAGE, IFN gamma appears as 25, 20, and minor 15.5 kDa bands due to differential glycosylation.
Human IFN gamma exhibits species-specific biological activity and does not cross-react with mouse IFN gamma. Its functions include antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity, induction of MHC class I and II, macrophage activation, and enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes. IFN gamma also regulates cytokine expression and acts synergistically with other cytokines through activation of the JAK-STAT pathway via IFN gamma receptor I and II.
Human IFN gamma shares about 40% sequence homology with mouse IFN gamma and is upregulated by IL2, FGF basic, and EGF, while downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN. IFN gamma gene mutations are associated with aplastic anemia.
