Target Information
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, causing hyperpolarization of the membrane through the opening of a Cl⁻ channel associated with the GABA-A Receptor (GABA-A R) subtype.
GABA-A receptors are important therapeutic targets for sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agents and are implicated in diseases such as epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The GABA-A receptor is a multimeric subunit complex composed of multiple alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, with several alternative splicing variants identified.
Functional GABA-A receptors are expressed when alpha and beta subunits are co-expressed, but benzodiazepine modulation requires coexpression of a gamma subunit.
Different alpha subunits may mediate distinct benzodiazepine effects in the brain. Phosphorylation of beta subunits has been shown to modulate receptor function.
