Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity, with highly dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends. Microtubules are essential for mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, intracellular transport, and cell motility via flagella and cilia.
In mammalian cells, microtubules have minus ends anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). GTP is required for tubulin heterodimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule polymerization is reversible, and dynamic instability describes the alternating growth and shortening of microtubules.
Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six genes encode alpha-tubulin classes.
