Target Information

Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) plays a crucial role in receptor-mediated signal transduction by generating two second messengers, inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate and diacylglycerol, from phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate.
There are multiple mammalian PLC isozymes, including PLCβ1, PLCβ2, PLCβ3, PLCβ4, PLCγ1, PLCγ2, PLCδ1, PLCδ2, and PLCε.

PLCδ1 acts as a calcium signal amplifier and is activated by an atypical GTP-binding protein. It also functions as an effector for GTP-binding protein transglutaminase II-mediated oxytocin receptor and α1B-adrenoreceptor signaling. Mouse PLCδ1 is highly expressed in brain, heart, lung, and testis.

PLCδ has been found abnormally accumulated in brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients, suggesting a possible pathological role. PLCδ2 is markedly expressed in type II intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma, and its expression may serve as a potential marker for gastric malignant transformation.
