Target Information
The Keratin multigene family consists of “soft” epithelial cytokeratins and “hard” hair keratins.
Epithelial cytokeratins contribute to epithelial layering and formation, whereas hair keratins form nails and hair.
Keratin 84 (KRT84, HB4, KRTHB4) is a 600 amino acid basic/neutral type II keratin expressed in hair follicles.
It heterodimerizes with type I keratins to form hair and nails.
The KRT84 gene maps to human chromosome 12, which encodes over 1,100 genes and represents approximately 4.5% of the human genome.
Chromosome 12 is linked to various disorders such as hypochondrogenesis, achondrogenesis, and Kniest dysplasia.
