This gene encodes a protein that is a component of the radial spoke head, identified by homology to proteins in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and other ciliates.
Radial spokes are regularly spaced structures along cilia, sperm, and flagella axonemes, forming a signal transduction scaffold between the central pair of microtubules and dynein.
Mutations in this gene cause primary ciliary dyskinesia 1, resulting from motile cilia and sperm dysmotility.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants.
