Target Information
Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the CNS. It acts as a Ca²⁺ sensor in exocytosis and neurotransmitter release regulation. Studies show its Ca²⁺-mediated SNAP25 binding is essential for Ca²⁺-dependent membrane triggering.
Discrete residues within the C2B binding domain independently specify endocytic rate and synaptic vesicle size. Synaptotagmin 1 may regulate membrane interactions during synaptic vesicle trafficking at the active zone.
It binds acidic phospholipids requiring both an acidic head group and diacyl backbone. Ca²⁺-dependent interaction occurs with receptors for activated protein kinase C, and Ca²⁺-independent binding with neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2.
Dysfunction of Synaptotagmin 1 is associated with food-borne and infant botulism.
