Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins with diverse functions in excitable and non-excitable cells.
The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) is unique in being activated by both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization.
The channel core forms a Maxi K⁺ alpha homotetramer with voltage sensor and calcium binding domains.
In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit (KCNMB1) associates in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration required to open the pore by 5–10 fold.
Maxi K⁺ beta-subunit plays a key role in regulating blood flow and blood pressure and is a potential therapeutic target.
