Target Information

The autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias (ADCA) are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive degeneration of the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord. ADCA types I–III are clinically distinguished, with genetic loci mapped to multiple chromosomes (SCA1–SCA6). ADCA is caused by expansion of CAG repeats, producing elongated polyglutamine tracts in proteins, leading to spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1). The locus is mapped to chromosome 6, with diseased alleles containing 41–81 CAG repeats compared to 6–39 in normal alleles. At least two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
