Target Information
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry into target cells is mediated by the envelope (Env) glycoproteins, present as gp120/gp41 trimers on the virion or infected cell surface. The gp120 subunit initiates entry by binding sequentially to the CD4 receptor and a co-receptor (CCR5 or CXCR4), inducing conformational changes that enable gp41 to mediate membrane fusion. Cleavage of Env into gp120 and gp41 is essential for activation of its fusogenic function.
