Target Information
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry into target cells is mediated by the envelope (Env) glycoproteins, which exist as trimers of gp120/gp41 complexes on the virion or infected cell surface.
The gp120 subunit initiates viral entry by binding sequentially to the CD4 receptor and co-receptors (CCR5 or CXCR4), triggering conformational changes that enable the gp41 subunit to mediate membrane fusion.
Cleavage of Env into gp120 and gp41 components is required for activation of its fusogenic function.
