Target Information
BID is a death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonist BAX or antagonist BCL2. It is a member of the BCL-2 family of cell death regulators and mediates mitochondrial damage induced by caspase-8 (CASP8). CASP8 cleaves BID, and the COOH-terminal fragment translocates to mitochondria, triggering cytochrome c release. BID functions as a pro-apoptotic molecule linking caspase 8 activation to mitochondrial death pathways. In living cells, BID exists in an inactive cytosolic form and becomes activated by caspase 8 in response to TNF alpha or Fas ligand. The cleaved C-terminal 15 kDa fragment (p15) is sufficient to induce cytochrome c release and apoptosis.
