Target Information
Spectrin (Sp) is the most abundant protein in the erythrocyte membrane skeleton and helps maintain the characteristic biconcave shape while providing flexibility and elasticity.
Erythrocyte spectrin is a heterodimer composed of a 280 kDa alpha subunit and a 246 kDa beta subunit, forming a 100 nm rod-like structure.
In other tissues, spectrin may be composed of homologous subunits referred to as fodrin.
A newer nomenclature designates erythrocyte spectrin subunits as alpha-1 and beta-1, and fodrin subunits as alpha-2 and beta-2.
Alternatively spliced forms are designated epsilon-1, epsilon-2, etc. (e.g., beta-1 epsilon-1).
