Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1 or HSP27) acts as a molecular chaperone that maintains denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It plays roles in stress resistance, actin organization, phosphorylation, and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in HSPB1 are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy 2B.
