Target Information
Cells respond to environmental stress by increasing the expression of heat shock or stress proteins. HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1, also known as HSP27) is a small heat shock protein functioning as a molecular chaperone that maintains denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates biological processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in HSPB1 can cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
