Target Information
Melanopsin is an opsin-like protein found in the retinal ganglion cells of mammals. It is part of a secondary optical system that parallels the classic rod and cone system, transmitting signals to the suprachiasmatic nucleus to regulate circadian rhythms. Melanopsin knockout mice show decreased ability to entrain to light and dark cycles, confirming its role as the primary photopigment for circadian rhythm regulation.
