Target Information
This gene encodes a protein belonging to the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Sequential activation of caspases plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis. Caspases exist as inactive proenzymes that undergo proteolytic processing at conserved aspartic residues to produce large and small subunits, which dimerize to form the active enzyme. The precursor of this caspase is cleaved by caspase 3 and 10, becoming activated upon cell death stimuli to induce apoptosis. Alternative splicing results in four transcript variants encoding three distinct isoforms.
