Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. It catalyzes the oxidation of aldehydes in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms exist—cytosolic and mitochondrial—distinguished by electrophoretic mobility and subcellular localization. Most Caucasians express both isozymes, while approximately 50% of Orientals express only the cytosolic isozyme, lacking the mitochondrial form. This difference may contribute to the higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
