The ion channels activated by glutamate are typically divided into two classes:

• NMDA receptors (NMDAR), sensitive to N-methyl-D-aspartate
• AMPA receptors (AMPAR), activated by alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxalone propionic acid

AMPARs are composed of four distinct Glutamate Receptor Subunits (GluR1–4) and play key roles in excitatory neurotransmission in the brain. The GluR2 subunit is particularly important in forms of synaptic plasticity such as long-term depression (LTD).
