Target Information
SNAPs (soluble NSF attachment proteins) act with SNAREs (SNAP receptors) and NSF (N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein) to mediate vesicle fusion with target membranes in processes such as synaptic transmission, intra-Golgi transport, endosome-to-endosome fusion, and transcytotic vesicle-to-plasma membrane transport.
During vesicle docking, vesicle SNARE binds to target SNARE, then α-SNAP (or β-SNAP in brain) binds to this complex, recruiting NSF to form a 20S fusion particle. ATP hydrolysis by NSF initiates membrane fusion.
