Flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMO; EC 1.14.13.8) are a multigene family localized in the endoplasmic reticulum of various tissues. These enzymes catalyze NADPH-dependent oxidative metabolism of drugs, pesticides, and other xenobiotics. Substrates are soft nucleophiles with electron-rich centers, typically nitrogen, sulfur, or phosphorus-containing functional groups.
