The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein, part of the MDR/TAP subfamily, functions as an ATP-dependent drug efflux pump with broad substrate specificity, contributing to multidrug resistance and reduced drug accumulation in resistant cells. It also serves as a transporter in the blood-brain barrier.
