Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. It interacts with CDK4 or CDK6 to inhibit kinase activation, functioning as a cell growth regulator controlling G1 cell cycle progression. Ectopic expression suppresses human cell growth in correlation with wild-type RB1 function. Knockout mouse studies indicate roles in spermatogenesis regulation and tumorigenesis suppression. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
