Specificity: Recognises the human Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).
Target Information
AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life. AFP expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, but hereditary persistence of AFP may occur without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and both genes are located in tandem on chromosome 4. AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms, and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP is observed in hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
