AF5 was prepared by immunizing female BALB/c mice with human amniotic fluid containing AFP, from a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect, diluted and emulsified in Freund’s complete adjuvant.

Specificity: Recognises the human Alpha-fetoprotein.

Target Information

AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and the liver during fetal life. AFP expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma. However, hereditary persistence of AFP may also be found in individuals with no obvious pathology. The protein is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and AFP and albumin genes are located in tandem on chromosome 4. AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind to copper ions, nickel ions, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP is observed in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
