Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a family of enzymes involved in detoxification by catalyzing conjugation of hydrophobic and electrophilic compounds with reduced glutathione.
The soluble GSTs are categorized into four main classes: alpha, mu, pi, and theta.
GSTP1 is a polymorphic gene encoding functionally distinct variant proteins that play roles in xenobiotic metabolism and may influence cancer susceptibility and other diseases.
